The Importance of Your Roof’s Underlayment

Planning a roof replacement? Don’t forget that your roofing underlayment is just as important as the kind of shingles attached to it. The underlayment plays an important role in protecting your roof from moisture damage: In case there’s a leak in your roof, the underlayment serves as a secondary barrier against moisture.

What are the other functions of roofing underlayment?

The Primary Function of Roofing Underlayment

In addition to shielding your roof from moisture damage, the underlayment also prevents chemicals used in shingles from coming into contact and potentially damaging your roof’s underlayers. Keep in mind that not all kinds of underlayments provide the same level of protection. That’s why if you’re planning a roof replacement, you should consult a professional contractor about which types of underlayments are most suited to your area.

3 Common Types of Underlayment

There are three underlayments commonly used in residential roofing installations: asphalt-saturated felt, non-bitumen synthetic underlayment, and rubberized asphalt underlayment. What are the advantages of each option?

  • Asphalt-saturated felt underlayment – This is the most affordable option of the three. Asphalt-saturated felt underlayment is made by saturating felt paper with asphalt to waterproof it. It generally comes in 15-pound and 30-pound weights. The latter is stiffer than the former but is less likely to suffer damage during installation.

  • Non-bitumen synthetic underlayment – Most residential and commercial roofing contractors prefer non-bitumen synthetic underlayment because of its excellent waterproofing abilities.

  • Rubberized asphalt underlayment – This is the most expensive option of the three but it’s worth the cost if you’re looking to maximize your roof’s protection against moisture damage. Rubberized asphalt underlayment contains a high percentage of asphalt and rubber polymer and has a strong adhesive underside, making it completely waterproof.

Having trouble deciding between the three? A professional contractor can help you choose the right underlayment for your home.
