Handling Roof Damage Following a Storm

The official start of spring is just around the corner and that means your home is more susceptible to roof damage. Why? Because spring brings severe weather, including high winds, thunderstorms and hail. The Climate Prediction Center is calling for central Texas to be drier and warmer than usual this spring, but we can’t predict how many storms will form this spring to wreak havoc on our homes.

After the spring storms hit, here’s what to look for to determine if you have roof damage.

Cracked or missing shingles
Try to stay safely on the ground and look at the shingles on your roof. Do any appear to be cracked or are there shingles missing? Look around your yard to see if there are any pieces of shingles laying on the ground.
Debris on the roof
Do you see small limbs or branches on the roof? While this doesn’t always mean roof damage, it’s a good indication that there might be some issues and you should keep an eye on your roof as well as your interior ceilings and walls for signs of water leaks.
Examine your gutters and siding
Are there dings in your gutters or damage to your siding? If so, that could be an indication that the shingles on your roof also suffered damage from the storm.
Interior damage
Examine the ceilings and walls on the inside of your home to see if you may have water stains or signs of water intrusion. This is usually a sign of a more significant problem with your roofing system.
